Tight Technique and Motivating Movements with Megha of Devyani
The first
half of the workshop will focus on technique for achieving that strong, yet
graceful Pure ATS presentation. We will break down several of the basic
moves in detail with a focus on alignment and muscular execution of the
movements.
The second half of the class will be dedicated to spins, turns and powerful
arms. We will cover all of the slow turns in our "basics vocabulary" as well
as fast spins. We will pay special attention to powerful arm postures and
movements to bring out the most powerful aspects of your turns.
Wear clothing appropriate for dance class and bring your zills!
Megha's Bio
Megha is a Birmingham, AL native who received her initial training from Carolena Nericcio, director of
FatChanceBellyDance and originator of American Tribal Style Bellydance in San Francisco, CA where she studied
from 1996 to 1998. She is now certified by Carolena to teach the FatChanceBellyDance format and is the exclusive
partner of FatChanceBellyDance.
After moving back to Alabama in late 1998 she co-founded the troupe "DancingBellies" which began her teaching career. In the fall of 1999 she moved to New Orleans and started teaching the first American Tribal Style classes in the area. From those classes emerged Devyani Dance Company. With the great reception of American Tribal Style in the area, Megha was able to teach classes four days per week plus additional weekend workshops for five years in New Orleans before again returning to Birmingham. She has taught well attended workshops across the Southeast and is now a highly sought after workshop instructor with bookings scheduled into October 2005. Additionally, in 2003 Megha taught 5 workshops at the Majma Dance Festival in Glastonbury, England as a representative of FatChanceBellyDance.
Devyani Dance Co. has performed at numerous festivals, weddings, private parties, gallery openings, theatrical productions and restaurants in New Orleans and Birmingham, as well as at festivals in Texas, Kentucky and Oregon. Megha has performed with FatChanceBellydance at the "Spirit of the Tribes 2003" festival in Hollywood, FL, "Rakkasah Middle Eastern Dance Festival" and Amira’s Restaurant in San Francisco, CA as well as in the Gala Show for the Majma Dance Festival in Glastonbury, England.
Megha has been featured in several New Orleans papers and been published in an alternative living magazine. Under Megha’s direction, Devyani Dance Co. has been nominated for "Best Ethnic Dance Performance of 2002 and 2003" by the Gambit Weekly’s Big Easy Committee as part of the New Orleans Tribute to the Classical Arts and OffBeat Magazine’s Best of the Beat Award for "Best Emerging World Band or Performer" in 2002 & 2003. Additionally, Megha has been given the honor of presenting Tribal Style Bellydance to students in two Louisiana school systems and at UAB.
In a dream come true, Megha has recently opened Birmingham's first international dance studio dedicated to offering exclusively ethnic and folk dances as well as yoga classes. She is honored to have recently presented a weekend of workshops with her teacher, Carolena Nericcio, for the first time ever in the Southeast.
