words from n.o.mad's land :: september 2006

::n.o.madic tribal performs tribal style bellydance, a completely anachronistic
fusion form of improvisational bellydance from no specific place or time::

Rather, tribal style bellydance honors the Romani Trail, the path taken by the Rom people--(we sometimes call them Gypsies, not knowing that to many, gypsy is a derogatory term). The ROM traveled out of north India through what today is Pakistan, Afghanistan, Iran, and Iraq, all the way to north Africa and even up into Spain. The style of dance we do takes elements from the dances of all these places and fuses them together in a lovely and stylized way.

This fusion adds a mythic quality to not only the movements, but also to the costumes, for our costumes--like the movements--are from everywhere and no where, making them timeless.

Come lose yourself at our weekly show
at the Dragon's Den (435 Esplanade, New Orleans). Fridays 8-10pm.

On the last Friday of this month, special guest Morrighan and her troupe Tribe Hip'notiq will grace the stage of the Dragon's Den. Show starts at 8pm sharp! :::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: WORD ON THE STREET :::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::
Original (but recently retired) n.o.mad Lisa Lala is with child.
If you haven't yet, give Lisa and Byron a call to congratulate them on their little one. We knew they could do it.

Original n.o.mad Lenay Dunn is performing with Red Lotus in San Francisco

PreK n.o.madic tribal company member Phuon Nguyen is off raveling the world with her beau Todd. She may relight somewhere on the West Coast.

PreK n.o.madic tribal company member Sami is back in town! Word is that she's dancing with local troupe Casa Samba.

PreK n.o.madic tribal company member Natalie Brown is now doing her own thing in her new home South Carolina. Her troupe, Delirium Tribal, performs regularly. Word is that she (and perhaps a few of her students??) may come to NOLA in late fall.

PreK n.o.madic tribal company member Shannon Wolfe and Kate Jensen are each teaching dance in NOLA and BR, respectively and are performing under the appellation, Indudala. They don't have a website that I know of, but you can catch them easy on Tribe.

PreK n.o.madic tribal company member Gena is studying poi and fire dancing in addition to her regular bellydance performances.

PreK n.o.madic tribal company member Liz Kerry still resides in Mississippi, and much to our delight, has taken up photography as a side-gig. See pics here!

:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: AROUND TOWN (AND BEYOND) :::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: VIRTUALLY N.O.MADIC ::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::
We've recently added a ton of pictures and several video clips (most blasts from the past) to our website, www.nomadictribal.com.

You can also find us on Tribe where you'll not only get to see candid pics that we'd never put on the website, but you can see the behind-the-scenes conversations and get to connect with other dancers across the region and country.

Did you spy our picture in this month's issue of our favorite local rag, AntiGravity? One of the reasons we've always liked that mag is because they recognize that New Orleans' culture isn't only about the music, and this time, they've proven it by including a plug for us. We're honored.
